So tonight I’m going to see Maxwell in concert (Chrisette Michele and Common are opening! Yay!) and I decided to try out my flat twist style. Yesterday, I co-washed with Suave Naturals, then conditioned with Kiss My Face Whenever Conditioner. I sprayed in my Infusium 23 leave-in, moisturized with my super moisturizer and then sealed with castor oil. I was working from home, so I put a plastic cap on and got to work.
Just before noon, I put 10 flat twists in my hair with so African Gold Curl Activator Gel with Aloe Vera and left it to air dry. I had to go to the chiropractor because I’m mashed up – folks, it’s bad. My right side is all out of place. Sigh. Alas, I wasn’t trying to undo my hair to be cute for the chiropractor, so I tied it down and put on a hat.
Today, I untwisted, fluffed and voila!

I don’t know how I feel about it. I like it, but I like my hair to have a more structured look—especially for work. It’s fine for a Maxwell concert (I’m channeling Maxwell during the Embrya album, y’all), but this is wilder than I normally wear it. I may just be that I have to get used to it or maybe I need to pull out my Ampro gel and get a stiffer hold – the African Gold gel is very light.
I think my biggest issue is that I don’t like how my ends look. They looked a bit dried out to me, but they feel fine… they feel pretty good, actually. I guess it’s the lack of definition that’s killing it for me.
I’ll keep trying it until a) I figure out what combination works best or b) I get fed up and can’t be bothered anymore.
So, lurkers, what do you think about the state of my hair this Friday morning?
I commend you for taking this journey, big sis. I think with the proper care you’re taking you’ll have long, natural, bountiful locks.
Healthy and strong is the goal — length is just the by-product! Thanks for commenting!
I think your hair is really cute like this, and it actually looks very structured to me. I know the feeling though.
