Product review: Cheap and cheerful – Tresemme Healthy Volume conditioner

tresemme healthy volumeI’ve seen Tresemmé ads and their products at Shoppers’ for years. I wanted to try them out but the bottle is big – 900 ml. The price isn’t bad, but if I don’t like it, I’d have a big bottle full of conditioner that I was resentful to.

A couple of weeks ago, I saw it on sale for $4.99 and thought, “Even if I hate it, you really can’t go wrong for $5 and it’s on sale.” So, I bought it.

A few nights ago, I brought my big ol’ bottle of Tresemmé Healthy Volume conditioner into the shower for a quick co-wash. It has a generic, perfumy smell that doesn’t hang around and that isn’t a bad thing. The product itself is thick and it’s easy to spread around soaking wet hair.

Normally, when I co-wash my hair it gets clean — but not as clean as this. I actually felt my hair squeak a little and it became sudsy! That was kinda nice. I’m still getting used to the lack of lather when co-washing. I scrubbed it out until my scalp and hair were clean. What I also noticed when I used my Kiss My Face Whenever wash out conditioner was that my hair was extremely easy to comb through. KMF normally leaves my hair manageable, but it was like butter. I moisturized with Miss Jessie’s Curly Buttercreme and sealed with a mixture of EVOO and castor oil. I put in some flat twists in the front and two-strand twists with Ampro Pro-Styl gel for my twist out.

The result? Bouncy, soft, manageable, moisture-rich curls. Yay! I did two things differently: I co-washed with Tresemmé Healthy Volume and moisturized with the Curly Buttercreme. The hair took longer to dry (the next morning, I still had damp patches in the back), but overall, it came out smashingly well.

One drawback for the Tresemmé conditioner: it has dimethicone (a silicone) in it. Silicones, for those of you who don’t know, can cause build-up and require you to use harsher cleansers to remove them from your hair. I’ve tried not to use products with silicones, but this won’t stop me from buying something that a) works, b) is available locally, and c) is cheap.

Today is day four since co-washing with Tresemmé and the hair is still looking great. Curls are still poppin’ and I’m still getting compliments. Right now, I’m down for Tresemmé — it could be my ride or die conditioner, but for the long-term, I don’t know if it will stay on my roster, especially if I do find that the silicone is building up on my hair.

We’re kinda like Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom – we fell in love fast, but let’s see how long it lasts 🙂

Thanks for clearly explaining the various steps that you go through….it really helps those of us (or just me) who are hair-impaired:)

No problem 🙂 You’re not hair-impaired — it just takes some time to figure out what you have to do.

Tresemme has a new line of conditioners without silicone. I am loving them, maybe you might give them a try? They have a volumizing and a moisturizing one. I love using them for pre-poos and co- washes 🙂

I’ve been hearing about this new line and I think I will try it BUT I’m trying to use up all the stuff that I bought over the course of 2009 (I know! I’m still trying to use products from 2009) before I buy anything new. As I run out of conditioner, I’ll some up. Thanks for the comment 🙂

I am trying to get in the habit of better products for my hair in my life – cause it does make a difference.

My long hair tends to get tangled after shampooing. So I always have to condition my hair. Most conditioners weighed my hair down or left hair feeling oily & usually took forever to dry. After using the Shielo Volume Conditioner – I LOVED how it got really easy to comb through my hair. And it also got easy to dry my hair leaving it shiny with volume.

This volumizing conditioner is my personal favorite. The ingredients are all natural and the results effective.I have very fine hair and this is my absolute favorite conditioner.
