Moisturize your situation – Part 3

Sorry folks! I was going to update yesterday — but I am starting to come down with something and I really didn’t feel like working. Nevertheless, I have been thinking about what moisturizers I would like to buy and try. I’m finally getting my braids put in this weekend, so these purchases, if they are made, will have to wait until the new year. Who am I kidding? At least one will be purchased.

So, here’s the list:

Qhemet Biologics Burdock Root Butter Cream: Supposedly, this product is for fine haired naturals, straight styles and those looking for a light penetrating moisturizer. It’s a light, water based leave-in that conditions and softens while nourishing the scalp. I’m neither fine-haired or straight-haired, but I like the ingredients and think that my hair would like it. Check out the ingredients:

Contains Pure Mediterranean Olive Oil for softness and emollience, extracts of Burdock Root, Nettle Leaf, Oatstraw and Wheat for their conditioning, scalp nourishing, shine enhancing and hair growth properties. Vegetable glycerin for its humectancy and MSM sulfur for nourishment and healthy hair growth.

I am a little concerned about the glycerin. In the dry winter conditions, supposedly will draw moisture out of your hair instead of bringing moisture into your hair. I’m curious about this burdock root — I don’t know much about this ingredient. The price isn’t too bad 8oz for $16 USD, but shipping prices SUCK — for those who want to try it, it’s available at Honey Fig in store, not online as yet.

Darcy’s Botanicals Madagascar Vanilla Styling Creme: Long enough name for you? This moisturizer is 100% vegan and 100% natural. From the description on the website, it absorbs instantly into hair to replenish much needed moisture, provide softness, sheen and promote healthy hair growth. This highly moisturizing butter is very thick and concentrated so a little goes a long way. It is perfect for type 3-4 naturals. Bingo! That’s me! Here are the ingredients:

Organic Palm Oil, Organic Aloe Vera, Organic Madagascar Vanilla, Vegetable Emulsifying Wax, Candelilla Wax, Organic Castor Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Organic Jojoba Oil and Potassium Sorbate.

Although palm oil is family to coconut oil, I don’t have a reaction to it. Praise God, ’cause who know what I’d be able to put in my head if I did! Alas, this stuff looks yummy and looks like my hair would enjoy becoming one with it.

But, as usual, my qualm comes from shipping prices — thank God for Honey Fig, but not everything I want to try is available at Honey Fig. Darcy’s Botanicals would like me to pay $24.75 for shipping a $12 item. Yeah, double what the actual product is worth. Chupse.  That is NOT the business. I’m not flying down to the States every six weeks, so it would be nice if shipping fees didn’t try to gouge out my eye.

Hamadi Shea Hair Cream: Firstly, I’m gonna have to ask the Hamadi people to work on their website. Honey Fig’s site says the product is great for use on various hair types. It’s main mission is to add moisture and protection to hair ends prior to styling; and it is an amazing styling product for natural afros to curly tresses. Sound good to me! What’s in it?

Purified Water (Aqua), Shea Butter* (Butyrospermum Parkii), Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Glyceryl Stearate, Candelilla (Euphorbia Cerifera) Wax, Glyceryl Laurate, Ceteareth 12, Glycerin (Vegetal), Dimethicone, Rice Amino Acids, Caprilic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin (Vegetal), Rosemary (Rosmarinus Officinalis) Extract, Panthenol, Sodium Hydroxide, Grapefruit Seed (Citrus Grandis) Extract, Tocopherol, Pyridoxine, Lemongrass (Cymbopogon Flexuosus) Oil*, Potassium Sorbate, Palmarosa (Cymbopogon Martini) Oil*, Exotic Verbena (Litsea Citrata) Oil*, Beta Carotene, Lemon (Citrus Limonum) Oil*.

Secondly, I have to ask the Hamadi people why is sodium hydroxide (also know as lye)  in a moisturizer? I am not a scientist, so I don’t know what all the uses of every ingredient and chemical are — but I’m giving this product a side-eye, because I can’t see what use that chemical would have in natural hair care. If anyone knows, leave a comment and share with me. I’m stumped folks. It’s also making me question some of the other ingredients in this mix — I’m not researching each one.

Hamadi’s Shea Hair Cream was on my list, but it’s dropped off until I can get an answer to my question.

So, naturalistas and relaxed girls, what products do you want to try out? Have you tried any of these? What did you think?
