I was trolling around my Goo.gle Reader as I do each morning, and I came across a number of natural hair bloggers discussing whether natural hair is seen as sexy or not. The issue came from a post written over at Afro-punk. She wrote about her own experiences and then posed this question:
“Will kinky hair ever be considered sexy, even if it is well taken care of, fits your personal style, and you’re exuding confidence?”
I say, heck yes!
For me, I’m not depending on others to validate how I look and whether or not I’m sexy. I’m sexy because I believe I’m sexy. The confidence that I have in myself is what, I think, makes me attractive — not my hair (although, I’ve felt extremely feminine and sexy since going natural). For example, last weekend, I was out for a friend’s birthday party and I was rocking my kinks all twisted up. I thought I looked great and did. Did I get any male attention? Well, my wedding ring would stave some of that off, but regardless of who looked at me and who didn’t, I felt good. I think that’s what it comes down to — how you feel about yourself. As one of the girls I used to work with said: “You think you’re cute, don’t you?”
Yep, I do.
I didn’t always think I was cute, but since hitting my 30s, I think I’m the cutest thing out. Hey, if I don’t big up myself, who’s going to? I’m not waiting for a soul to determine how I feel about me — whether my hair is relaxed or natural. Check out the hair pics from Saturday night — my kinks in all their natural glory (AND rocking glasses to a party. I would have NEVER done that before. But it was either rock the glasses and see or don’t and be blind. I chose glasses):
When my hair was relaxed, I never felt 100% myself. If I went out to a party or something, my hair never did what I wanted it to. It wasn’t as healthy, it was breaking and it wouldn’t grow past my shoulders. I certainly didn’t feel sexy… well, that’s not completely true. I felt like a hot girl at times, but those times were fewer and farther between.
I love my kinky hair and I think it’s extra sexy. The only regret I have about cutting off my relaxer was that I didn’t do it sooner. So, readers, what do you think? Is kinky hair sexy or do you think straight hair is hotter? On a larger scale, do you think that natural hair will become a standard of beauty like straight hair is or is natural hair just a fad?
Amen! I sure as hell think I’m cut and so should everyone else. I’m still in my mid 20’s, but my belief in y cuteness started when I hit college and was solidified by about sophomore year. Now that I’m natural, you can’t tell me nothing! When people who aren’t secure in themselves try to bring me down for loving myself, I mentally hit the ignore button and let their negativity roll off my back like a duck!
Amen!
I think first off, confidence is sexy. Period. And it shows.
Second, I know when I see a black woman, confidently walking down the street with her natural hair [and she’s got good style to boot], I think she’s got it going on! And I wanna BE her [i’m getting there – again].
Will natural hair become a standard of beauty?
It could, but I think it’s still a long time coming.
All women still battle with the ‘long, blond’ standard – whether white, black, brown or whatever. People that have no business going blond [in that it just does not suite their colouring] – do it regardless, I think, because that standard still prevails. Notice how every new hot starlet/singer/performer, if they are dark haired naturally/or when they came out, eventually get’s lightend and lightened?
But kinky hair is definitely sexy. And I think one of the reason’s why is because you are being yourself confidently when you wear you’re natural. You’re owing it %100, versus cussing getting your hair relaxed hair wet [i do not fear walking in the rain!], having to re-do your braids or weave [that anxiousness of the braids/weave getting passed the point of messy and trying to find the time to re-do them], feeling in-authentic and fake. Yes, kinky hair is sexy. We just have to continue to wear it proudly and eventually, others will see the light 🙂
I think natural hair is like a paradigm shift for some. I include myself in this number. But for others it is a fad. In my circle there are those who look to see what I am doing but have no intentions of following suit. Oh, I am speaking of men and women even though I am a brother. The women are funny! They’re older say 50+,I will say,”Why not go natural?” They have told me I am not interested in going natural no way, uh uh.” The men in my circle have said that I must be going through a fad or that that’s for young folks! I am 38 and I feel more in control of me now than ever before! Stay kinky, rock you natural andcontinue to be the change you want to see!
