Product review: Herbal Essences Long-Term Relationship conditioner

he_ltrI’ve been trying different products looking for the perfect co-wash conditioner. I believe that I found that with the Tresemmé Healthy Volume conditioner — which is my ride-or-die conditioner. I bought Herbal Essences Long-Term Relationship at the same time I bought the Tresemmé conditioner and decided to try it out before I put my twists in.

Like usual, I detangled in the shower and squirted the HE LTR into my hand. It was very sweet-smelling — it was pretty nice, actually. It smells like raspberries and has raspberry juice in its ingredients. Talking about ingredients, here they are:

water, stearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, stearamidopropyl dimethylamine, rubus idaeus (raspberry) juice, hydrolyzed silk, glutamic acid, bis-aminopropyl dimethicone, fragrance, benzyl alcohol, edta, citric acid, propylene glycol, sodium chloride, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, red 33.

So, I got it deep into my roots, which can be a feat in itself, and started scrubbing away. It was OK. Yes, just OK. I know that a lot of people swear by LTR, but I didn’t find it that great. I prefer Tresemmé. It’s not that LTR doesn’t get the job done, it just didn’t make my hair or my scalp feel as clean. My scalp, and its cleanliness, is a completely different post that I’ll share with you at another time.

Anyway, I wasn’t so fussy with LTR as a co-wash. So, I left it in my bathroom wondering what I could do with it next. Last week, I was researching the Moisturize your situation series and I noticed that a lot of naturals have been using conditioner as a moisturizer. If you watched my video on my braid regimen, you would have heard that I’m a little uncomfortable with using conditioner as anything else — it’s a learning process, folks. But when I heard about it, I said, “hmmm…why not?”

Guess what?

It was great! My hair smelled great, it was soft and I don’t think there was any extra build up. I say, I don’t think there was any build up, because I was having some serious scalp issues last week. Who knows what was building up on my scalp? It was a horrible mess in there. Back to the review at hand: my hair was soft and that made me happy.

Now, that I’m rocking my braids — and a very clean scalp six days after my wash — I’ve used it once to moisturize and I was happy with the results. So, maybe I have to move my LTR to the moisturizer category. I’ll let know!

Do you use it as a co-wash or as a moisturizer? I’m still trying to figure out which use is best for me…
