I have wanted to try Kinky Curly Curling Custard (KCCC) since I first heard about it last year. It is one of those products that everyone online raves about. Here are the ingredients:
Botanical infusion of water, horsetail, chamomile, nettle and marshmallow, organic Aloe Vera Juice, Agave Nectar Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Pectin, Citric Acid, Potassium Sorbate and Natural Fragrance.
I planned to buy it, but when I saw the prices at HoneyFig (the only spot in town that I know of that I can purchase it), I had to back up: $29 (CAD) for 8 oz and $43 for 16 oz.
Good grief!
Like really, that’s a lot of dough for some hair products. Now, when I first became a product junkie, I probably would have plunked down my $29 to buy KCCC. Today, I’ve put my product junkie ways aside because product junkie-ism is dang expensive. Maintaining my hair shouldn’t cost as much as maintaining a dog — really, the amount of money I once spent was ridiculous.
Anyhow, I put my dreams of trying KCCC on the back burner and I was quite happy using my various gels.
Well, in July, my sister and I went to Miami to celebrate her birthday and I came across a Ricky’s on Lincoln Rd. Mall. I had to go in — they have oodles of stuff. I told myself, that I would purchase just one product. Well, guess what I came across? KCCC. 8 oz for $17.99 USD. Not cheap, but not crazy. So I bought it and brought it back to Toronto with me.
After doing some reading online, I saw that KCCC supposedly doesn’t play well with certain leave-ins and they recommend that you use the Kinky Curly Knot Today. Well, I didn’t purchase Knot Today in MIA and I wasn’t planning to spend $26 on it in Canada — considering my Giovanni Leave-In Weightless Moisture makes my hair happy for $7.
I decided to wash my hair on Saturday afternoon. I did some different things:
- I washed my hair in four sections. I’m really trying to combat those pesky single strand knots. They are so dang annoying! I’m wondering if my technique washing my hair is doing more harm than good. So, I’ve seen a number of people on YouTube try it this way. We’ll see, we’ll see.
- I did an Apple Cider vinegar wash on scalp. I’m tired of battling my scalp. It’s so touchy. Today, it’s happy, flake free and ready to go. The next day, it’s itchy, flaky and dirty. I’m just annoyed with it. So, I’m going to incorporate more ACV scalp washes. I also washed my hair with Val’s Veggie Bar Pure Olive Oil soap. I know, I know — but, you know what, I have to do something to deal with this scalp… especially if I’m planning to braid it this weekend.
- Finally, I did an ACV rinse after I conditioned with Aussie Moist.
Next, I used my Giovanni leave-in and go to twisting my KCCC.
Folks, I understand the hype. KCCC is AWESOME! For real! I like my Pro-Styl Clear Ice gel and the Eco-Styler Olive Oil gel, but KCCC defined my curls without any crunch or questionable ingredients. I swear, if I had tried this when I first heard about it, I would be spending out my paycheque to keep me in KCCC. Real talk. I would like to try it when I’m doing a twist-out — if my self-done kinky-twists work, I won’t be wearing any twist-out until November 2010.
Now, I’m thinking about investing in the 16 oz and maybe picking up some Knot Today for Summer 2011, God willing.
Anyone else use KCCC? Were you shocked by its wonderfulness?
The Accidental Natural 
well, my first and only experience with the curling custard was good/bad. I found that it provided amazing curl definition with a wash and go, especially with the current length of my hair. In the past when my hair was natural, it had to be a lot longer, to be able to get it to curl the way the custard did. But I did feel it left my hair crunchy and, my hair stay wet the entire day. Maybe I used to much?? Don’t know. Now that my hair is out of braids, I’ll try experimenting with it again.
Maybe you did use too much – I used a dab per twist. I’m not sure what it would do with a wash ‘n’ go. I’m absolutely positive that my hair hates them. The KCCC with my twists was beautiful. I only wish that I had styled it for a twist out. The week starts protective styling, so no more open styles until at least November 😦
So glad you liked your new product…thats always exciting. I haven’t tried the KCC, I have heard great things about it. However, I do use the knot today …and LOVE IT!, it is a keeper in my regimen…love it…love it….love it !

I must say that I agree and LOVE KCCC. I have found that if you use too much it can get kinda crunchy. ALSO any straight/texturized hair tends to dry crunchier. I’ve recently ordered Bee Mine whipped cream, but my hair seems to like the gel better. I’ve found that the two mix well together and my hair goes nuts for the mix.
I just finished my container of KCCC. My hair was extremely short and it did define the curls but I think I’ll use it again as it gets longer along with Uncle Funky’s Daughter’s Thirsty Curls
I’ve been interested in hearing more about Uncle Funky’s Daughter. What do you think about the products?
Delineation Salon/Spa on Yonge north of Eglinton has the 8oz for $19.75 and the big one for $34 I think. A lot cheaper than HF. I think you can also shop online…

Delineation recently moved further south on Yonge, and just before the move they had a pretty decent sale with 20% off most products, so I stocked up on Curly Kinky products. I bought my first jar at The Curl Ambassadors on Harbord, but their price was considerably higher than Delineation’s regular price. I just finished that first jar – it lasts a long time and I wash and go my hair several times a week.
