I haven’t said much about Black History Month this year. It’s not because I’m disinterested, it’s just that I haven’t had the time to participate or even look into any BHM events. As the last weekend of Black History Month is upon us, here are two events that you can get involved in if you’re in the GTA.

Anglican Diocese of Toronto Black Heritage Service

The annual service celebrating the black heritage of the Anglican Church will be held at St. Paul, in Toronto. The Rev. Canon Cheryl Palmer, incumbent of St. Clement, Eglinton, will be the preacher. The theme will be “Seize the Promise! God’s goodness sustains us.” The service will include a mass choir, liturgical dancers, and afro-centric music.

WHEN: Sunday, February 27, 2011, 4:30 p.m.

WHERE: St. Paul’s Anglican Church, 227 Bloor St. E., Toronto

Markham Celebrates Black History Month Recognition  Event

As part of Markham’s yearly celebrations marking Black History Month, Markham Council and the Markham African Caribbean Association (MACA) are holding a recognition ceremony on February 28.

WHEN: Monday, February 28, 2011, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WHERE: Anthony Roman Centre (Markham Civic Centre), 101 Town Centre Blvd. Markham (Highway 7 and Warden Ave.)

WHO: Mayor Frank Scarpitti and Members of Markham Council; Representatives from Markham African Caribbean Association and York District School Board; Award Recipients; Guest Speaker Dwayne Morgan, founder of Up From The Roots; Performances by students from Hartman P.S., Parkview P.S., Wismer P.S., Donald Cousens P.S., Unionville High School, Rockford P.S. and the Afrocentric school.

I will be attending the service at the church on Sunday afternoon — it’s usually pretty good, if not kinda long 😉
